YC18 TAS Broodstock

Year Class in Review

74 YC18 families were produced at IMAS Taroona from 24/09/2018 - 20/10/2018. They were put out on the water in late December 2018 and tested at three sites: Pitt Water, Pipe Clay and Little Swanport. A total of 154,186 oysters were measured. All were very good trials and survival ranged between 15% and 32% which provided good discrimination between families across a range of disease severities.  Genetic expression of POMS resistance was strong, with moderately high heritabilities.  These are amongst the best heritabilities we have seen for spat trials (for more informaiton on heritabilities, please visit our FAQ page).

EBV + Inbreeding Values

The top ten POMS resistant families were made available for commercial allocations. They were tested under three POMS exposure scenarios; severe, moderate and light (for more technical information, please refer to the detailed technical report).

YC18 SA Broodstock

Year Class in Review

53 YC18 families were produced at SARDI. There were three distinct cohorts produced (05/12/2018, 10/01/2019, 26/02/2019) and were put on the water early January to late March, 2019. Animals were tested at two sites: Smoky Bay and Port Adelaide for SA survival and POMS, respectively. The heritabilities for both these trials were poor (please see summary table below). This was due to spat being in poor condition from the hatchery (and therefore limited numbers of animals to test), Port River having drawbacks as a test site and logistical barriers beyond ASI's control. Despite this, ASI is conducting some performance testing on the YC18's in Smoky Bay and has shifted its focus on YC19 trials. Currently, there are four SA survival trials (across four sites) and more performance trials planned (i.e. test for all other commercial traits:condition, shell length, shell width, shell depth, etc). Please refer to YC19 page for more information.
