2018 TAS Broodstock
Year Class in Review
74 2018 families were produced at IMAS Taroona from 24/09/2018 - 20/10/2018 using 2015, 2016 and 2017 broodstock. They were first deployed to the field in late December 2018 for POMS exposure trials at Pitt Water and Pipe Clay Lagoon. A total of 154,186 oysters were measured. Performance data (meat condition, shape, and growth) was collected in August 2020 at Little Swanport and Pitt Water.
EBV + Inbreeding Values
The top ten POMS resistant families were made available for commercial allocations in June 2019. EBV’s were generated under three POMS exposure scenarios; severe, moderate and light (for more technical information, please refer to the detailed technical report).
All were very good trials and survival ranged between 15% and 32% which provided good discrimination between families across a range of disease severities. Genetic expression of POMS resistance was strong, with moderately high heritabilities. These are amongst the best heritabilities we have seen for spat trials. Performance data EBV’s were observed to have good heritabilities for the traits ranging from 0.372 to 0.780.

53 2018 families were produced at SARDI over 3 distinct spawning’s on 05/12/2018, 10/01/2019 and 26/02/2019. Spat were deployed from March to late May 2019. Animals were tested at Port Adelaide for a POMS exposure trial from Nov 2019 to Feb 2020. The heritability of this trial was low due to the Port River having drawbacks as a test site and logistical barriers beyond ASI's control.
SA survival data collected on this year class has had very low heritabilities. This was due to spat being in poor condition from the hatchery, late deployment, and the limited numbers of animals to test. SA survival data continues to be collected for this year class. Performance trials have been established at 2 sites Cowell and Smoky Bay with data collection to commence late in 2020.
EBV + Inbreeding Values
Whilst the heritability from the POMS trials in Port Adelaide were low, EBV predictions were strengthened form genetic linkages to the Tasmanian population. This has added to the robustness of the EBV’s. Further data will be added to the database for SA survival and performance trials prior to this year class being commercially allocated in the beginning of 2021.
